When J.K. Rowling sat down to write Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, I’m sure she had no idea that a bespectacled, black-haired boy with a lightning bolt scar across his forehead would go on to become the merchandising juggernaut that he is today. With a plethora of best-selling books, toys, and a movie being eagerly devoured by a rabid public hungry for more, it was inevitable that a game should eventually work its way to the hands of millions of eager gamers everywhere.

Titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (owing to a title change from its British cousin), this game, brought to us by the good folks at Westlake Interactive and being published by Aspyr, brings Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger home to the Mac, allowing gamers to experience the adventures and events that take place in the 1st Harry Potter book by which this game shares its name.

Judging by my nit-pickiness in choosing to enlighten readers to the original title used in the 1st Harry Potter book, it’s probably easy for more intuitive readers to discern that I am, in fact, a Harry Potter fan. Despite this, however, I booted up my beta copy of Harry Potter, gotten fresh from the Macworld Expo, with more than a little trepidation. Avid gamers know that any game bearing the title of a movie spells almost certain doom for the quality of said title. One only needs to look at the track record of past movie-related games to see why this is the case. Happily, however, Harry Potter manages to buck this trend and actually provides a decent gameplay experience for those willing to give it a shot.

The Harry Potter game follows the storyline setup in the 1st Harry Potter book. Harry Potter is a beginning student at Hogwarts Academy, a school for wizard children. As he spends his first term attending classes and meeting various people, he also has a series of adventures along the way, some of which are perpetrated by the fact that it seems that someone is not only trying to obtain the fabled Sorcerer’s Stone, but is also trying to kill Harry off in the process.

Fans of the book will be happy to know that the game tries to incorporate as many plot threads from the book as possible. According to a short conversation with Glenda Adams at the latest Expo, Rowling herself has the final say on anything Harry Potter related, including games. Though some events are heavily modified, most of the original story is kept intact, meaning that players familiar with the series will cover some very familiar territory in the course of playing.

Harry Potter runs off the Unreal Tournament engine. It should also be noted that it is a Carbonized app that runs under both OS X and 9. All I can say is, if UT itself can be made to run half as well as Harry Potter does under OS X, Mac gamers everywhere won’t stop grinning for weeks. This is because Harry Potter runs like a dream in its OS X incarnation. To be perfectly frank, I saw absolutely no difference between the OS 9 version and the OS X version. Both ran fast, smooth, and pretty.

While Harry Potter won’t win any awards for graphical achievement, it has a clean look that makes it more than easy on the eyes. As is usually the case with titles that skew towards the younger crowd, Harry Potter is filled with a wide variety of vibrant colors and various objects. The environments themselves are huge and varied, with details such as a multitude of paintings of famous wizards being included with some of them.

The animation itself can best be described as okay. The skeletal animation itself is limited at best, and facial expressions never change – there is no mouth movement to speak of when characters talk to each other. Given the medium of the game, however, the animation is good enough to convey basic emotions and movements. Anyone who’s played the first Tomb Raider should have a pretty good idea of the quality of animation that Harry Potter contains.
